It used to be the case that if you wanted to bet on a boxing match, you had to make sure your bet was in before the fight started. Another big advantage of live betting is that it allows you to hedge your bets much more effectively. If you bet on an outsider to win against a favourite, but your plucky underdog looks dead and buried by the second round, then you could place an ‘insurance’ bet on the favourite to win. If the favourite wins, the winnings from your second bet will cancel out some of the losses from your first. If the underdog wins, the cost of the second bet will be more than absorbed by your long-odds winnings on the first.
